Chapter 1 Flashcards
Statistics is divided into what 2 categories
descriptive and inferential
descriptive statistics
procedures of organizing and summarizing data
ex : what scores did we obtain (tables and graphs)
inferential statistics
procedures used for making inferences about characteristics of the population based on characteristics of a sample (inferences)
population and parameter
population = complete set of events, collection of all individuals who have particular characteristic (ex: college students)
parameters = numerical values summarizing population data
Sample and Statistics
sample = a set of actual observations; subset of the population (used to make inferences)
statistics = numerical values summarizing sample data
2 types of data
measurement and categorical
measurement data
quantitative
measuring objects or events
numerical value
measurement done by instrument
categorical data
qualitative
frequency or count data
you won’t get a mean based on these results but rather more descriptive
differences vs relationships
-differences between groups (take 2 groups of people and compare)
-relationships between variables (if you exercise way happens to heart rate and body?)
