Attributes shaping citizenship : Legal status

A

D: Official recognition of the citizenship status of Singaporeans, through the rights given to them and the responsibilities expected of them. Rights are liberties that citizens in a country have that are protected by the law, Responsibilities refer to the duties of a citizen to fulfil because they are connected to other members in the community or society.

Ex: Rights to education, no citizen will be discriminated against on the grounds on religion, race, decent or place of birth when it comes to the provision by a public authority of financial aid for education of students in any educational institution

Attributes shaping citizenship: Sense of identity

A

D: A sense of national identity comes form a shared belief that we belong to the same country. This may be because citizens may share aspects of a common way of life and feel strongly about similar things.

Ex: Common practices such ads the singing of the national anthem and taking the national pledge every morning for students and events such as National day.

Attributes shaping citizenship: Participation in public affairs

A

A: Public affairs refer to issues that are of general interest or concern to most people in society. Citizens can contribute towards the good of society either as individuals or organised groups

Ex: In 2012, Singapore had a national-level conversation where citizens can come together to share their views and ideas about what matters to Singapore, as well as their hopes and dreams. This exercise became known as “our Singapore conversation”
