Chapt 23 Spirochetes Flashcards
Treponema pallidum pallidum sub-species?
Genital syphilis
Chancre
Lesion characteristic of primary syphilis, typically a single, firm, painless erythematous ulcer with a clean surface & raised border
Treponema pallidum pertenue sub-species?
Yaws
Treponema pallidum indicum sub-species?
Non-venereal syphilis
Stages of infection of T. pallidum?
Primary, Secondary, Latent, Tertiary
Primary
Genital chancre (10-90 days)
Secondary
Skin rashes (2-12 wks)
Latent
Asymptomatic, but 50% untreated patients will progress
Teritiary
Neurosyphilis (months-yrs after initial infection)
Spirochetes
Elongated, slender, helical, “snake-like” bacteria, corkscrew locomotion, periplasmic flagella
Treponema pallidum
Difficult to culture in vitro & rarely performed, Visual detection: Dark Field Microscopy & Direct Fluorescent Antibody Stains, Antibody dectection: Non-Treponemal Antigen Tests & Treponemal Antigen Tests, susceptible to penicillin
Dark Field Microscopy
Observation of live motile organisms from lesions
Direct Fluorescent Antibody Stains
Stains organsims from lesions
Non-Treponemal Antigen tests
RPR & VDRL
Treponemal Antigen tests
FTA & MHATP
