Skill
A learned action or behaviour with the intention of bringing about predetermined results with a maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy
Ability
Inherited from parents, abilities are stable traits that determine an individuals potential to learn or acquire skills
Skills from sport
- Passing in football
- Tackling in rugby
- Front crawl in swimming
- Handstand in gymnastics
- Shooting in basketball
Skill continuum’s
Skills can be classified in a number of different ways depending on the number of characteristics they share
Skill classifications: •Basic to complex •Open to closed •Self paced to externally paced •Gross to fine
Basic skills
•Few decisions need to be made •Few decisions actually effect the success of the movement •Tend to be taught to a beginner •Learned quicker Eg jumping
Complex skills
•Complex decision making •Lots if decisions need to be made successful •Taught to experienced •Can take time to master Eg backward summersault in diving
Open skill
•Unstable environment
•Effected by people around you
•Externally paced
Eg rugby
Closed skill
•Stable environment
•Not affected by people around you
•Internally paced
Eg golf
Self paced
•The start of the movement is controlled by the performer
•The speed, pace or rate is decided by you
Eg cricket baller
Externally paced
•The start of the movement is controlled by external factors
•The speed, pace or rate is decided by someone else
Eg return serve
Gross
•Involves big movement of the body
•Large muscle groups
•Doesn’t rely on accuracy and precision
Eg rugby
Fine
•Involves small, precise movements
•Small muscle groups
•Involves precision and accuracy
