chap1 Flashcards
What is a system?
A group of components that interact to achieve a purpose.
- Not necessarily technology related(Trees)
- When the system PURPOSE is to create information, it becomes an information system.
- Info system is not necessarily technology ( Door to door research)
What is a computerized info system?
An info system that is enabled by technology, it is commonly associated with Management Information System (MIS).
What are the 6 components of MIS?
- Hardware
- Software
- Data
- Procedures
- People
- Networks
Explain and give an example of MIS components?
- Hardware= All electrical components of the system ( Computer, cable, phones)
- Software= Programs and apps that are part of the system (Microsoft Office, Adobe, Myconcordia)
- Data= Facts and sats collected from the information ( Sales revenue, grades, temperature)
- Procedures= Instructions or steps followed to achieve an outcome ( How to turn on a computer, how to write an essay)
- People= Humans using or interacting with the system ( both directly and indirectly) ( DIRECT USERS= Touching the dive, ex programmers, someone who logs in. INDIRECT USERS= never touch but receive, Manager who receives a system-generated report ( didn’t physically use the system themselves )
- Network= Connects the computers within the system, and connects the system to other resources( Internet, cables)
What is IT?
Information Technology. ( Raw Technology, ex: Just a computer)
- Hardware
- Software
- Data
- Networks
What is IS?
Information System ( Gives IT a purpose ex: A computer that is used by a manager( People) to generate monthly sales forecasts (Process) )
- Hardware
- Software
- Data
- Networks
