What had Protestant ascendancy had to do with the Catholics becoming angry?
Protestants had all the power and land, Catholics had few rights and could not sit in parliament
What had The influence of the French/American got to do with the Rebellion ?
People began to think about rights and independence
What ere penal laws and what did they do?
Laws which discriminated against Catholics and Presbyterians. This made the people very unhappy.
Explain the United Irishmen (Who, what, where,when,why)
Who?:Most leading members were middle class Protestants. First members were Wolfe Tone and Henry Joy McCracken.
What?:A group of Men who wanted an equal Ireland
Where?:First met and formed in Belfast , second branch in Dublin
When?:set up in 1791
Why?:To unite Catholics and Protestants; bring liberty and equality to Ireland and reduce English power in Ireland by peaceful means
What happened in 1793?
The United Irishmen became banned as Britain went to war with France
Who was Lord Edward Fitzgerald?
He was from one of the most powerful families in Ireland. His father was the duke of Leinster and owned Leinster house.He was one of the few members of the Protestant ascendancy who supported the French Revolution and wanted Ireland to become a republic.
Tension over land
As Ireland’s Population grew, land prices increased. Catholics were willing to pay more to rent land, this led to divisions among Catholics and Protestants
What did the aim of the United Irishmen change to?
They were now willing to use violence and terror to make Ireland a Rephblic
Who organized the French help and why were they willing?
Wolfe Tone had organized French help and they were willing to help as they hoped that they could weaken their British enemy.
What did the French send to Ireland?
The French sent an invasion of 43 ships and 14,000 soldiers
Why was the expedition of the French help a disaster and what happened afterward?
- One ship was separated from the rest
- A violent storm prevented the rest from arriving in Ireland
- They were forced to return to France
- They weren’t interested when asked again
