Chap 9 Categorical Logic Flashcards
Boolean interpretation
the interpretation of categorical sentences that was developed by George Boole and that dispensed with the assumption of existential import for universal sentences.
Aristotelian assumption
The assumption underlying the Aristotelian square of opposition, that the categorical statements under consideration all have existential import.
Empty class
A class in which no entities of that category exist.
Existential import
A categorical statement is said to have “existential import” if its subject term refers to a class that is not empty; that is, the subject term refers to actual existing entities.
Existential Viewpoint
( or standpoint) The viewpoint presupposing that the subject terms of the sentences under consideration designates actually existing things.
Hypothetical Viewpoint
the viewpoint that does not presuppose that the subject terms of the sentences under consideration designate actually existing things.
Modern Square of opposition
the square of opposition that results when the aristotelian assumption is dropped. the arrows for contradiction are all the remain.
Venn diagram
A drawing of overlapping circles designed to represent the information contained within one or more categorical statements.
