Chap 7. Structure/function of human body Flashcards
What are the two major divisions of the skeleton and what are they made of?
Appendicular- shoulder girdle, arms, wrists, hands, pelvic girdle, legs, ankles, and feet
Axial- skull, vertebral column, thorax, face
What is the cardiac muscle?
The pumping contractions and relaxations of the muscle.
What is the largest organ of the body?
Skin
What are the three layers of skin?
Epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous
Describe epidermis
The outer layer of skin. Consists of 5 layers, contains no blood supply or nerves. The outer most layer is composed of cells that have died from environmental exposure and are shed daily
Describe dermis
The second layer of skin, which contains involuntary muscles, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat and oil glands
Describe subcutaneous
The inner most layer of skin containing fatty and connective tissue
What is sudoriferous glands?
Sweat glands
What is sebaceous glands
Oil
What are sphincter muscles?
Circular muscle that controls the opening and closing of passage way
What is the hearts main function?
Pump enough blood at high enough pressure to supply every part of the body.
What is endocardium?
Smooth layer that lines inside of heart
Myocardium?
Thick layer of muscle tissue that performs pumping
Pericardium?
Sac like membrane that surrounds the heart
What is epicardium?
The outer layer of heart
Where does the blood enter heart?
Deoxygenated blood arrives the vena Cana and enters the r atrium
Where does blood leave the heart?
Left ventricle through the aortic valve
What does the pulmonary artery do?
Carries oxygenpoor blood to the lungs
How does oxygenpoor blood travel to the heart?
Veins
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins, capillaries
What clumps together to form clots when a blood vessel is damages and aid in preventing loss of blood?
Platelets
What are white blood cells?
Fight infection, manufactured in bone marrow and can be produced on demand
What has no nucleus and can’t reproduce themselves, and carry oxygen to the body cells?
Red blood cells
What does the blood consist of?
Rbc’s wbc’s platelets and plasma
