Chap 7 Flashcards
nasolacrimal duct
the passageway that transports tears from the nasolacrimal sac to the nasal cavity
fontanelle
A relatively soft, flexible, fibrous region between two flat bones in the developing skull; also spelled fontanel
Cranium
the braincase; the skull bones that surround and protect the brain
fall cerebri
the curving sheet of dura mater that extends between the two cerebral hemisphere; encloses the superior sagittal sinus
auditory ossicles
the bones of the middle ear: malleus, incus, stapes
coccyx
the terminal portion of the spinal column, consisting of relatively tiny, fused vertebrae
spinous process
the prominent posterior projection of a vertebra; formed by the fusion of two laminae
temporal
pertaining to time (temporal summation) to to the temples (temporal bone)
Cranial
Pertaining to the head
fissure
an elongated groove or opening
Orbit
the bony recess of the skull that contains the eyeball
suture
The fibrous joint between flat bones of the skull
palate
the horizontal partition separating the oral cavity from the nasal cavity and nasopharynx; divided into an anterior bony (hard) palate and a posterior fleshy (soft) palate
paranasal sinuses
Bony chambers, lined by respiratory epithelium, that open into the nasal cavity; the frontal, ethmoidal, sphenoidal, and maxillary sinuses
lumbar
pertaining to the lower back
sinus
a chamber or hollow in a tissue; a large, dilated vein.
Vertebral canal
The passageway that encloses the spinal cord; a tunnel bounded by the neural arches of adjacent vertebrae
Maxillary sinus
One of the paranasal sinuses; an air-filled chamber lined by a respiratory epithelium that is located in a maxilla and opens into the nasal cavity
intervertebral disc
A fibrocartilage pad between the bodies of successive vertebrae that absorbs shocks
cribriform plate
A portion of the ethmoid that contains the foramina used by the axons of olfactory receptors en route to the olfactory bulbs of the cerebrum
xiphoid process
The slender, inferior extension of the sternum
thorax
the chest
coxal bone
hip bone
vertebral column
The cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, the sacrum, and the coccyx
