chap 7 Flashcards
what is meant by environment
totality of physical condition on the earth, the physical surroundings and condition in which a person lives
give the meaning of renewable resources
resources that can be used again and again
eg : water, forest, land, etc
what is meant by absorptive capacity of the environment
it is the environments ability to absorb the degradation and pollution
expand cng
compressed natural gas
what happens when the rate of the resource extraction exceeds that of its generation?
the environment fails to perform its vital role of sustaining life and this might lead to environmental crisis
explain any 4 functions of the environment
> supplies both renewable and non renewable resources
sustains life
assimilates waste
provides aesthetic services
what are non renewable resources
resources that can get exhausted with use. eg: petrol, coal, iron ore, etc
what do you mean by carrying capacity of the environment
carrying capacity implies that the rate of extraction is not above the generation and the waste generation is within the assimilating capacity of the environment
why is government expenditure on health increasing?
government expenditure on health is increasing because the quality of air and water is consistently decreasing. causing respiratory and water diseases.
write 2 threats to the environment in our country
> the threat of pollution from rapidly growing industrial sectors
the threat of poverty from increasing environmental degradation
4 strategies to obtain sustainable development
> use of non-conventional source of energy
use of compressed natural gas
use of solar energy
practice traditional knowledge in fields of healthcare
give the meaning of bio pest control
bio-pest control is a method of using plants as a form of pesticides and spreading awareness on animals which help in controlling pests. eg: neem and snakes
name the medical system in AYUSH
ayurveda, yoga, unami, siddha, homeopathy and naturopathy
is the environmental crisis a recent phenomenon? if so, why?
the environment crisis is a recent phenomenon. it is due to supply-demand reversal. with increasing population there is increase in demand and limited resources. this puts pressure on the natural resources and they are being over used. this lead to an environmental degradation. the major issues are -
> land degradation
> bio-diversity loss
> air pollution
> management of fresh water
> solid waste management
explain the supply demand reversal of environmental resources.
the environment can perform its function without interruption as long as the supply is more than the demand for natural resources. if the demand increases it leads to environmental crisis. currently we are faced with increased demand but the supply is limited due to over use and misuse, major causes are-
> rising population
> affluent consumption
> extensive extraction
explain the suggestions given by herman italy to achieve sustainable development
> limiting population the carrying capacity of the environment
technological progress should be environmental friendly
complete nutrilization of non-renewable resources
use of renewable resources should not surpass its availability
adverse effects of pollution should be corrected
write a note on eco-friendly traditional knowledge and practices of our country
during the ancient times, humans lived very close to the environment, they were one with the environmental system. they did not try to control it, all the facilities were environmental-friendly. but after the times changed we switched from traditional to modern methods, using modern technologies that are bad for the environment. the time has come to go back to traditional methods to help sustain the environment ( healthcare example )
AYUSH has become more popular because it is completely environment healthy
India has abundant natural resources?
> the black of the deccan : deccan plateau is rich in black soil which is great for cotton
the northern plains : they are highly fertile contributing to the majority of agriculture
69 million hectares of forest area for wildlife
iron ore, core, natural, gas, gold, etc
coastline of 75000 kms for fishermen and wind power.
explain 6 strategies for sustainable development
> nutrilization of non-conventional source of energy - thermal powder plant omit too much co2 so wind power and solar energy should be used
liquified petroleum gas - energy generated from small turbines can be used in local areas
bio composting - using organic matter to compost
bio pest control - using pesticides made from plants or using animals
use of cng
use of solar energy
