Chap. 5 Part III (p. 254-267) Flashcards
Slavery
- Harsh slave life in the U.S.
- opposition to spread of slavery due to northern fears of competition from slave labor, not moral concern
- After civil war, the US did not develop a program of economic and educational aid to Af Amers
- So many had to remain on plantations
Post Slavery
- After a few yrs laws prohibiting inter marriages and req racial seg in schools and public places
- Jim Crow laws
- WWII opened up new employ opps for Af Ams
Brown vs. Board of Ed in 1954
Ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional
2 developments have characterized the socioeconomic circumstances of Af Ams in the recent yrs
- Middle class has emerged
- More than half of all Af Am children are not being raised in single-parent families
5 Strengths that allow Af Amers to function effectively in a racist society
- Strong kinship bonds
- A strong work orientation
- Adaptability of family roles
- Strong achievement orientation
- A strong religious orientation
Negative Evals of African American in ed
can be self-fullfilling if Af Amers are expected to fail in school
Self Concept
refers to the positive and negative thoughts and feelings that one has toward oneself (self image, sense of self, self esteem and identity-same)
Positive self concept
key element in school achievement, in positive social interactions with others, and in emotional, social and intellectual growth
If Af Am adults accept society’s label of inferiority I
they are likely to convey these thoughts and feelings to their children. children may then develop a neg self concept and put less effort into developing cog skills & school.
If Af Am adults accept society’s label of inferiority II
Less likely to develop interperson and tech skills-which then results in having difficulties in social interactions and to being restricted to adulthood to low paying, low-skill jobs. Vicious circle completed when they have children
Studies on discrimination show that self concept in Af Am children
does not necessarily have to be impaired by racism. More survivors, achievers and victors than casualties.
Given racism and discrim, why is it that many Af Am children overcome these obstacles?
Every person is embedded simultaneously in at least 2 systems.
1. larger society
2. immediate social and physical environment
Child in a good immed environ can prevail
Afrocentric perspective & worldview I
acknowledges African culture and expressions of African beliefs, values, institutions, and behaviors. It recognizes that Af Ams have retained to some degree a number of elements of African life and values
Afrocentric perspective & worldview II
It asserts that the use of Eurocentric theories of human behavior to explain the behavior of ethos of Af Am is often inappropriate (they have often vilified ppl of color)
Afrocentric perspective & worldview seeks to dispell
the negative distortions about ppl of African ancestry by legitimizing & disseminating a worldview that goes back thousands of yrs and that exists in the hearts & minds of many ppl of Af Am descent today
