Chap 4:IOT Flashcards
what is internet of things ?
its the networking of smart objects. its a network of devices that can sense, accumulate and transfer data over the internet without any human intervention.
what does internet of things consist of ?
it consists of a gigantic network of internet connected things and devices.
what are the most important features of IOT?
- AI
- Connectivity
3.Sensors
4.Active engagement - Small device use
whats AI, connectivity , sensors , active engagement and small device use in IOT
- it makes things smart
- it enables networking spec iot networking
- transforms devices into an active system capable of real world integration
- iot introduces a new paradigm for active content , product or service engagement
- iot exploits purpose built small devices to deliver its precision , scalability and versatility.
what are examples of domains where iot can be used
connected industry , smart city , smart home , smart energy , connected car , health care
what is the history of IOT
the internet started out as part of DARPA in 1962 then ARPANET in 1969.
1980, public use of ARPANET.
1993, GPS became reality with the department providing a system of 24 satellites.
1999, kevin ashton became the first to describe IOT.
2013, the IOT had evolved into a system using multiple techologies.
what are the advantages of IOT
- improved customer engagement =
- technology optimization
- reduced waste
- enhanced data collection
what are the disadvantages of IOT
- high nbr of devices -> a lot of information shared -> nbr of hackers increase
- bug in the system = all connected devices corrupted
- difficult communication for devices from different manufacturers
- the presence of a big number of devices can make collecting and managing data challenging.
what are the challenges of IOT ?
- various kinds of attackers
- keeping privacy
- complexity of the system
- flexibility
how does IOT work?
there are smart devices in the IOT ecosystem have embedded processor , sensors and communication hardware which enables them to collect, send and act on data that the they acquire from their environments.
They share the sensory data they collected by connecting to an IOT gateway to the cloud so that the data could be analyzed.
Most of them work without human intervention, although people can interact with the devices for example to give instructions, access data etc…
how is IOT built what are the components?
there are 4 major components:
1. sensing layer
2. network layer
3. data processing layer
4. application layer
what is the sensing layer
its main purpose is to identify any phenomena in the devices peripheral and obtain data from the real world.
it consists of several sensors and there are 3 categories:
1. motion sensors
2. position sensors
3. environmental sensors
Motion sensors
they measure the change in motion as well as the orientation of the devices.
Position sensors
they deal with the physical position ad location of the device. Ex: GPS
Environmental sensors
they sense the change in environmental parameters in the device’s peripheral.
The primary use of this sensor is to help the devices take autonomous decisions according to the changes of a device’s peripheral.
