Chap 30 joining processes Flashcards
The combining of individual parts in order to make an overall product
joining
The melting together and coalescing of materials by means of heat; the joining together of two parts by the application of heat, which melts and fuses the interface; the operation is sometimes assisted by a filler material
fusion welding
Metal added to the weld area during welding; it is usually available in the form of a filler rod or wire
filler material
General term used to describe any welding process that uses a fuel gas combined with oxygen to produce a flame; the flame is the source of heat that is used to melt the metals at the joint; the equipment for this process consists of a welding torch connected by hoses to high-pressure gas cylinders and equipped with pressure gauges and regulators;
oxyfuel gas welding
Exothermic welding process, involves mixing of metal powder (FeO) with a metal oxide (Al2O3), then using a high temperature ignition source to cause an oxidation-reduction reaction; temperature can reach upto 2500 deg C, melting iron, which subsequently flows into a pouring basin and then into a mold placed around the parts to be welded
thermite welding
Type of flame in oxyacetylene gas welding in which the ratio of acetylene to oxygen is 1:1
neutral flame
Peak tensile stresses develop in the following region of weldment
fusion zone
Portion of the base metal with properties that have been altered by its proximity to the weld metal during a fusion welding process
heat affected zone
Non-consumable electrode arc welding process
gas tungsten arc welding
Substance used to retard oxidation of the surface of the parts being welded by generating a gaseous shield around the weld zone
