How does Diversity Wheel relate to Social Justice & Privilege?

A

It helps us recognize where we are in terms of our rights based on multiple factors. It also helps us recognize the disparities of access to things based on each person’s living conditions (physical, environmental, social, mental, etc.).

What is Privilege?

A

Advantages, rights, immunity & other benefits a person or community has that brings oppression to another group. Those with privilege don’t realize they have some since they are oblivious to the POVs of those oppressed.

A

Intersectionality: Overlapping Identities framing experience of peeps & recognizing their advantages or disadvantages.

Environmental Intersectionality: system = interconnected w/ own impact on environment. Should connect ourselves more to environment basic system, + view it through holistic & cultural POV.

A

Set of ideas holding racial bias as inherent in parts of Western society (mainly legal & social institutions) on basis of being designed for & by white peeps.

A

“Ism” = Discrimination: disrespect someone or things based on characteristics.

Racism: based on someone’s Race,
Ableism: based on someone’s Physical Ability,
Homophobia: against Homosexuals,
Ageism: based on someone’s Age,
Transphobia: against Transgenders,
Ethnocentrism: based on someone’s Culture or Ethnicity,
Classism: based on someone’s Class (poor, working or rich),
Sexism: based on someone’s Sexe,
Heterosexism: against Homosexuals & assuming Heterosexuals = normal orientation,
Mentalism: based on perceived mental ability (ex. assuming ability based on neurotypical or neurodiverse.)

A

Calling In: Notice discrimination + take person who committed action to the side + discuss together why what they did is wrong to insure they understand their mistake.

Calling Out: Notice discrimination + call it out on the spot when action has happened. Interrupting to prevent further harm.

What is Bill 21 & Why is it problematic?

A

Law that bans religious symbols in any civil servants in position of authority from wearing at work. Problematic because it affects mainly the religions with visuals religious symbols causing more discrimination. Many young women are against this law especially in regards of the woman’s hijab.

What is Toxic Masculinity?

A

Behaviours that men are taught to be viewed as a man but are in fact completely normal for human beings no matter their sexe. Consists of repressing one’s emotions, what they can or cannot do, their interests, societal norms of a man’s role, etc.

Define Pity, Sympathy, Empathy & Compassion.

A

Pity: acknowledge your suffering,

Sympathy: care about your suffering (acknowledge someone’s distress (may provide support) w/out truly understanding their feelings (no lived experiences)).

Empathy: feel your suffering (understand how someone = feeling through their lived experiences or those around. Hold space for them w/out dismissing their feelings).

Compassion: want to relieve your suffering (take action in relieving suffering through action).

A

Equality: same treatment for all

Equity: fair treatment, considering individual differences

Liberation: removal of systemic barrier to ensure equity & universal access

Define Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.

A

Equity: Recognition of Historic + Current Inequalities. Fair treatment of all community members through removal of institutionalized barriers, biases & obstacles jeopardizing, opportunities for all to achieve full potential.

Diversity: Representation of different knowledge, worldviews, practices, experiences, w/in community. Individuals hold diverse/intersecting identities. Allows richer cognitive processing + exchange of information, + enriches learning, working + living environment.

Inclusion: Achieved when all members of community = inherently valued + welcomed + feel sense of meaningful belonging.
