Chap 23: Delivery And Transport Systems Flashcards
Advantages of road transport
Fast over short distances
Relatively cheap
Goods loaded and unloaded once, thus reducing insurance costs
Not subject to timetables
Disadvantages of road transport
Subject to traffic congestion
Bad weather may cause delays
Slow over long distances
Not suitable for bulky products
Advantages of rail transport
Fast over long distances
Suitable for cheap and bulky goods
Not subject to traffic congestion
Reliable and safe
Disadvantages of rail transport
Usually subject to timetable
Fixed routes only
Must be used with another means of transport eg. Car
Expensive over short distances
Advantages of sea transport
Suitable for bulky goods
Cheap over long distances
Suitable for containers
Specialized ships suitable for different goods
Disadvantages of sea transport
Slow over long distances
Must be used with other means of transport
Subject to weather conditions
Usually subject to timetable
Advantages of air transport
Fast over long distances
Suitable for small expensive goods
Safe
Disadvantages of air transport
Expensive, especially over long distances
Subject to weather conditions
Unsuitable for bulky goods

Size of good: it the product bulky? Will it fit on the chosen delivery system?
What is a pipeline?
A system of inter-connected pipes that transport gases or liquids, usually over long distances
Advantages of pipelines
Cheap to operate
Very good safety record
Disadvantages of pipelines
Expensive to set up
Suitable for gases and liquids only
Tachographs
Devices installed on commercial vehicles that record the vehicle’s speed and the length of time that it is moving or stationary
RO/RO
Roll on/Roll off
Ships that allow cars and fully loaded trucks to drive on and off them
LO/LO
Load on/ Load off
Ships that allow goods to be lifted on/off them eg.by crane
