Chap 14: Aircraft lighting provision Flashcards
what is precipitation satic
build up of charge on the aircraft by its path through charged particle in air
(interfere with radio freq.,)
can be reduced by fitting static dischargers on wing tips and empennage
direct effects on lightning hazard
dielectric puncture, melting/ burning of structure or surface
damage antenna or burn raio
indirect effects on lightning hazard
may damage electronics components
lightning hazard to fuel system
striking at poor conduction section may cause sparking of inside of tank
strikes may puncture skins, heat fuel tank skins, may cause arcing
may produce electrical sparks
protection against lightning strikes
1) just dont fly or avoid the clouds
2) outer skin of aircraft being very good conductor of electricity (current allowed to flow through the skin)
3) install shielding and surge suppressors so temporary electric dont hurt wiring/avionics
4) fuel tank made from low electrical conductivity composite material
(metal mesh installed to redirect electrical flow from composite materials)
bonding and static wicks
electrical bonding used by jumpers, clamps
- creates a path for current to flow and prevent charge from building an arc
installing static wicks on wing trailing edges:
piece of metal connected electrically to the frame
allows it to dissipate static electricity build-up out into external air
FAR code for lightning protection
FAR 25.581
