Stress?
The process by which we perceive and respond to certain events, called stressors, that we appraise as threatening or challenging.
3 types of categories that causes stress?
Chatastrophes, life changes, daily hassles
General Adaption syndrom (GSA)?
Selye’s concept of the body’s adaptive response to stress in three phases - alarm, resistance, exhaustion.
What does “tend and befriend” mean?
under stress, people (especially women) often provide support to others (tend) and bond with and seek support from others (befriend).
Psychophysiological illness?
means “mind-body illness” –> any stress-related illness such as hypertension (forhøjet blodtryk) and some headaces
Psychoneuroimmuniology means?
the study of how psychological, neural and endocrine (kirtlesystem som kommunikere til organer via hormoner) processes together affect the immune system and resulting health.
Lymphocytes?
The two types of white blood cells that are part of the bodys immune system: B Lymphocytes and T Lymphocytes.
B Lymphocytes?
form in the bone marrow and release antibodies that fight bacterial infections
T Lymphocytes?
form in the thymus (et lymfeorgan) and other lymphatic tissue abd attack cancer cells, viruses, and foreign substances.
Coronary heart diseases?
the clogging of the muscles; the leading cause of death in many developed contries.
Man type A?
Friedman and Rosenmans term for competetive, hard-driving, impatient, verbally agressive, and anger-prone people.
Man type B?
Friedman and Rosenmans term for easygoing, relaxed people.
Which component of the type A pesonality has been linked moste closely to coronary heart diseases?
feeling angry and negative much of the time.
What does(stress) coping mean?
alleviating stress using emotional, cognetive, or behavioral methodes.
Problem-focused coping?
attempting to alleviate stress directly - by changing the stressor or the way we interact with that stressor.
Emotion-focused coping?
attempting to alleviate stress by avoding og ignoring a stressor and attending to emotional needs related to one’s stress reaction.
What is perceived controle?
a sense of controle (important for mental/psychical health)
What is aerobic exercise?
sustained exerciese that increases heart and lung fitness; may also alleviate depression and anxiety. (jogging, swimming, biking are examples)
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)?
as yet unproven health care treatments intended to supplement (complement) or serve as alternatives to conventional medicine, and which typically are not widely taught in medical school used in hospitals, or reimbursed by insurance companies. When researchers show a therapy to be safe and effective it usually then becomes part of accepted medical practice.
