Chap 10 Company Operations Flashcards
A team of fire fighters with apparatus assigned to perform a specific function in a designated response area.
Company
Minimum Requirements for a Pumper Fire apparatus according to what NFPA
NFPA 1901
- Min tank of 300 gals
- Hose compartment of at least 30 cubic feet for 2 ½ inch or larger supply and two compartments of at least 3.5 cubic feet for 1 ½ inch or larger attack hose
- Min pump size of 750 gpm
Onboard water tank for a fire engine.
Booster tank
When a second engine hooks to a fire hydrant and supplies the full volume of the pump.
Capacity Hook up
Three options when laying hose lines to move water from a water source to the fire scene?
- Forward lay: Fire hydrant > Fire Scene
- Reverse Lay: Fire Scene to Fire Hydrant
- Split Lay: combo of both
In areas where hydrants are not readily available, what options do fire fighters have?
Drafting and Water tenders
How to determine the Tender Delivery Rate (TDR)?
Capacity of tender/time it takes to refill and come back.
Ex: 2500 gal tender takes 20 mins for refill cycle
2500/20= 125 gpm
Three basic steps in fire suppression are:
- Locating
- Confining
- Extinguishing
Difference in vent controlled fire and fuel controlled fire?
Vent controlled: displays high smoke volume and pressure ( Incomplete combustion)
Fuel controlled fire: one that is growth limited by the supply of combustibles, Fully involved fires are an example of fuel controlled.
The search for concealed fire areas and eventual total extinguishment
Overhaul
When fighting a fire in an apartment building, whats one thing that can be done to assist in fire attack?
Quick look at the layout of the apartment directly below.
What must be done prior to entry when the fire is in the decay stage? Why?
Vertical Ventilation
In the smoldering phase, all that is needed for fire to free burn violently is introduction of oxygen. Vertically venting allows gases to escape through vertical opening.
The role of this company involves:
- Forcible Entry
- Search and Rescue
- Ventilation
- Laddering Buildings
- Overhauling and Salvage
- Shutting off utilities when necessary
*
Ladder company operations
Technique used by fire fighters to remove smoke and heat from a structure. Changing of air within a compartment by natural or mechanical means.
Ventilation
Benefits of vertical ventilation:
- Prevents fire gases and heat from banking down from upper floors
- Increases survival time of victims by channeling gases and heat away from them
- Clears hallways and stairwells of smoke and heat
- Assist and search and rescue and in fire attack
Preferred way of getting to the roof in large multiple dwellings.
Preferred method is getting to the roof by via an adjoining building.
Frees up the aerial for other positioning and windows.
First thing the roof division must consider when getting on the roof?
A way of getting off the roof if the primary means is overcome by fire.
When Bulkheads, scuttles, or skylights are present on the roof what must be done by the roof division?
Immediately force open any existing roof openings.
What must be done after opening of bulkheads and skylights?
Probe to look for victims overcome on bulkheads and draft stops on skylights
Minimum size the roof should be cut?
4x4 hole
If you cut the roof and notice white paste on the saw what is this and what should you do?
Indicates a wet gypsum and you need to evacuate the roof
If horizontal ventilation is performed prematurely, it could lead to what?
Rapid extension and possible autoextension
Fire spreads from floor to floor as a result of fire coming out of a window and into the window above. Also known as auto exposure.
Autoextension
The movement of heat and smoke from higher air pressure within a fire building to all other lower air pressure areas, both within and outside the fire building.
Flow path
At a minimum, ladders should be extended where?
to each floor on which fire fighters are operating.
Ideally, on each side of the building
This phase of overhauling that includes pulling ceilings and examining baseboards, shafts, and so forth to determine the fires path of travel and location.
Precontrol
Phase of overhauling performed after the fire is under control.
Postcontrol
Apparatus Placement Considerations for Engines, Ladder Companies and Aerial Trucks
- Engine companies: location should allow room for aerial trucks to access the front of the structure
- Ladder Companies: Location should allow maximum versatility
- Aerial trucks: Location should allow access to the best scrub area
The area of the building that can be reached with an aerial ladder once the apparatus is set up; a consideration for ladder truck placement
Scrub area
Safety zone set up around fire building where the potential for a collapse exist; what is the height of the zone?
Collapse zone
Full height of the highest wall.
