Chap 10 Flashcards
Different form of Vit E
1-Tocopherol * alpha-tocopherol (3) *beta-tocopherol (3) * gama-tocopherol (3) * psy-tocopherol (3) 2- Same for Tocotrienol
Mechanism of action of Vit E
Antiocidant
Provide electron to lipide radical
SEE SLIDE
Function of Vit E
1- Function of alpha T as Antiocidant
Inhibit oxidation of LDL
Free radical scavenging in cancer cell, retina, brain,
2- Function of alpha-T &TT as cell signaling molecule
Modulate gene expression W/ anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferation, anti-apoptotic
Interaction of Vit E with other nutrients
Regeneration of Vit E
Membrane, lipid droplets
Vit E cycle interact with Vit C cycle in aqueous environment
Vit K 1- Discovery 2-Bioc or physio funct 3-Deficiency syndrome or symptoms 4- sources
1- Dam 1935
2- Active blood-clotting factors by gama- carboxylation get glutamic acid residue, carboxylate other proteins
3- Defective blood clotting
4- Syntheszed by intestinal bacteria, green leaky vegetables, soy bean, beef liver
Vit K
Menadione K -4
Vit K1 — MK-4
Menaquinone-7 (MK-7)
Mechanism of action of Vit K
Gla-protein bind to Ca2+, which reacts with other cell component like phospholipid to affect blood clotting and bone mineralization, among other process
Vit K interact w/ other nutrients
- Excess Vit A & E interferes with Vit K absorption
- Excess Vit A & E interferes with Vit K absorption
Vit K deficiency
-Unlikely on healthy adults
-Newborns at risk because milk is low in Vit K
-Severe deficiency— hemorrhage
Subclinical deficiency—– bone fragility
Vit E 1- Discovery 2-Bioc or physio funct 3-Deficiency syndrome or symptoms 4- sources
1- Evan and Bishop 1923
2-Antiocidant
3-Myopathy, anemia, neuropathy
4- Vegetables seed
