Chap 1 Definitions Flashcards
What is the external view of a system?
elements that do not belong to the sys but do interact with the sys
What is the operating environment/context of a system
= the external view that can include system users
What is the system boundary?
the line of demarcation between the system and it greater context (inc environment)
What is the system functionality?
interactions of the system with the its operating environment (esp users)
What does system functionality derive from?
interactions of individual sys elements and the organisation of the sys elements.
What is a system architecture?
elements, relationships, system concepts and properties
What is engineering?
creation and sustaining services, systems, devices, machines, structures, processes and products to improve quality of life
What is a system attribute?
an observable characteristic or property of the system or system element.
What are attributes represented by?
Variable that is not necerserally measurable
What is a measurement?
the outcome of a process in which the system of interest interacts with an observation system under specific conditions. Assignment of a value to a variable.
What is a system state?
when values assigned to attributes remain constant for a meaningful period of time
What is a system process?
things that system elements have (in addition to attributes). They are either idle or executing.
What makes up a system state description?
values assigned to all attributes and processes.
What is dynamic behaviour?
the states over time
What is emergent behaviour?
a behaviour of the system that cannot be understood in terms of behaviour of individual elements
