Define pharmacology
The effect of drugs on the body and the effect of the body on drugs encompasses therapeutic response is an adverse effects of drugs as well as absorption and metabolism and excretion of drugs
What is a drug
A chemical has demonstrated to be effective for preventing or treating a disease
The three ways drugs are named
Chemical, generic, Brand
Describe the ways in which drugs are classified – four
Chemical structure, therapeutic effect, mechanism of action, legal classification
Describe a nonprescription drugs
Without a prescription, generally low risk of adverse effects and toxicity, no need for medical oversight, effective for large number of people at recommended dose
Describe a prescription drug
Generally higher risk of side effects, require monitoring of additional drugs being taken, should only be taken for a restricted amount of time
What part does the FDA play in drug development
Responsible for review and approval of all new drugs. Put through rigorous testing procedures before their approved
Describe the three phases of clinical trials
Phase 1–20 to 80 volunteers, healthy, not taking other medications
Phase 2–100 to 300 individuals who have the disease
Phase 3 1000 to 3000 individuals at a variety of clinics and hospitals
Describe the three classes of drug recalls
Class one – reasonable possibility that there is a serious threat to the health of the consumer
Class two – use our exposure to the product in violation may cause a temporary health problem that is reversible or the probability of serious health effects is remote
Class III- use or exposure to a product that is in violation is not likely to cause a health hazard
What is a PDR
Physicians desk reference – contains info about drugs listed in alphabetical order by tradename according to manufacturer
