Urban Sprawl?
When a city spreads out into the surrounding countryside
Urbanisation?
When there is an increasing proportion of people living in towns and cities
Rural to Urban Migration?
People move from the countryside into towns and cities
Central Business District (CBD)?
Main shopping and service area in a city, usually found in the middle of the city as it is easily accessible
Inner City?
Area around the CBD, (usually built before 1918 for the UK)
Outer City?
Area on the edge of the inner city
Suburbs?
Housing areas on the edge of the city, that are cheaper than the city and only a short commute
Rural-Urban Fringe?
Right on the edge of the city, where there are both urban (factories) and rural (farming) land uses
Brownfield Site?
Land that has been built on before and is to be cleared and reused (often in the inner city)
Greenfield Site?
Land that has not been used before, usually on the edge of a built up area
Segregation?
Where people of a particular ethnic group choose to live with others from the same ethnic group, separate from other groups
Squatter Settlements?
Areas of cities that are built by people, using any materials they can find, on land that doesn’t belong to them
Informal Sector?
Part of the economy where jobs are created by people to try and get an income, and are often not recognised in official figures
