Changing population and places Flashcards
Crude birth rate:
The number of live births, per 1000 of the population , per year. Expressed as ‰
Crude death rates
The number of deaths, per 1000 of the population, per year. Expressed as ‰
Age-specific death rate
The number of deaths in a particular age group, per 1,000 of the population, in the same age group [this will be used for looking at COVID, for example]
Natural change
The difference between birth rate and death
Natural Increase
When birth rate is higher than death rate.
Natural Decrease
When death rate is higher than birth rate
Doubling time
the number of years needed for a population to double. Divide 70 by rate of natural increase e.g 70 ÷ 4.3%
Population momentum
This is when population continues to increase, despite falling birth rates – due to a large number of people in childbearing ages
Population projections
predictions about the future population structure, based on fertility, mortality AND MIGRATION
Total fertility rate
average number of births per thousand women of childbearing age
Life expectancy
average number of years a person can be expected to live at the time of their birth [HL – can use HALE]
infant mortality
The number of deaths under 1 year, per 1000 live births, per year. Expressed as ‰
