What is an endogenous factor?
The internal or local factors that shape a places character.
What are exogenous factors?
Factors that have an external cause or origin on a place.
Define locale:
A place where something happens or that has events associated with it e.g. culture, history
Define positionality:
Factors which influence how we perceive different places.
Give the 8 endogenous factors:
- Land use
- Topography
- Physical geography
- Infrastructure
- Demographic characteristics
- Built environment
- Location
- Economic characteristics
Give the 4 exogenous factors:
- People
- Money and investment
- Resources
- Ideas
Define location:
Where a place is on a map.
Define ethnic clustering:
Residential areas with similar cultures, ethnicity or religions.
Define built environment:
- The human-made surroundings where people live, work and play.
- E.g. buildings, housing, parks (anything constructed by humans)
Define cultural enrichment:
The addition of ideas, traditions or beliefs due to the arrival of new people.
Define genius loci:
The ‘spirit’ of a place, based on its history, culture and daily atmosphere.
Define social exclusion:
The inability of a group to become involved in the cultural activities of a place.
What is topography?
- The physical shape and features of land.
- e.g. valleys, mountains, slopes, elevation
Define infrastructure:
- The basic physical systems and services needed for a place to function.
- e.g. transport networks, utilities, sewage, communication systems
What is land use?
- How land is used or managed by humans.
- Includes residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, recreational land use.
- About the purpose and function of the land, not what has just been created there.
What is physical geography?
- All natural features and processes in earth.
- e.g. landforms, climate, vegetation, hazards, ecosystems.
