Changing Places: Skills and Maps Flashcards
Topographic map
A map showing the different elevation of a land
Advantages and disadvantages: topographic map
You can see the elevation and which direction the rivers flow but it is confusing as there are many lines`
How can you tell the direction the river is flowing
The river is flowing downhill and check the V shapes formed by the river. The bottom of the V is upstream of the river or opposite of the direction it is flowing
Relief
The highs and lows of the Earth’s surface
How to calculate relief
The difference between the highest and lowest point
Gradient
Measure of the steepness of a slope between 2 points
How to calculate gradient
Difference in height/distance then represent as a ratio
What are the lines on topographic maps called
Contour lines
How to tell if an area is steep
The contour lines are very close
Depression contours
Lines drawn with marks on the interior of the edge used to show an unexpected drop in height (volcano)
Contour intervals
The difference between 2 contour lines
BOLTS
Border, orientation, legend, title and scale
Cross-section
A diagram which shows the shape of a landform represented on a map
How to draw a cross-section
Take a piece of paper and make a mark every time the contour lines crosses the paper. Plot it on the graph and fill in the height and connect the dots with a circled line
