Topophilia
A strong sense of love of a particular place
Topophobia
A fear or dread of certain places
Insider
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with not only its topography but also its daily rhythms and events.
Outsider
The perspective of someone who does not know a place well or someone who is marginalised in a community.
Exogenous
Factors from outside a place that force a change in a places character
Endogenous
Factors within a place that help shape its character
Inter-Country Migration
The movement of people into a country from another country
Intra-Country Migration
The movement of people around a country, remaining in the same country
Homogenisation
The process whereby places and social characteristics become more similar to each other so that they eventually became indistinguishable
Regeneration
A form of renewal and redevelopment of a run down area to improve the conditions of an area and the quality of life experienced by those who live there.
Far Place
Somewhere that is known but is not known well due it being a distance away
Near Place
Somewhere that is known well due to it being close by
Experienced Place
A place that you have visited and know well
Media Place
A place that you have experienced through virtually or through other people’s perception
Place
The way an area is perceived depending on location, local and emotional attachment
Urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of a country’s population that live in an urban environment compared to a rural environment
Counter Urbanisation
The movement of people away from large urban settlements to smaller urban settlements and rural settlements
Clone Town
A town where the high street is dominated by transnational corporations
Community Group
An organised collection of people with shared interests and aims often concerning aspects of
public life.
Identities
A combination of physical, psychological and behavioural traits that contribute to a person’s
self-awareness and how others perceive them. This is in part shaped by where they live
and/or their place of birth.
Representation
How a place is portrayed by the views, statements and communications of others. This may
be through formal sources such as census data or through informal sources such as media
reportage and imagery or verbalisation by others.
