What is sense of place?
The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place. This can change from one person to another.
What things can impact the perception of place?
Gender
Religion
Age
Sexuality
Performing role
How does location and locale differ?
Location is simply where a place is, but locale is the impact of people on that place, e.g. the cultures, history and customs within it.

What things may influence your sense of place?
Sense of place is influenced by the quality or intensity of the experience you have there. Amount of time also affects attachment, so you can not care about a place but still be attached, e.g. school or work.
What is placelessness?
Placelessness is the idea that a landscape could be anywhere because it lacks uniqueness, e.g. McDonalds
What is an insider?
An insider is someone who knows a place well, and is familiar with not only its topography, but also its daily rhythms and events.
What is an outsider?
An outsider is someone who does not know the place well, or someone who is marginalised in a community, such as minority groups.
What was Relph’s (1976) quote about insiders and outsiders?
“To be inside a place is to belong to it and identify with it. Outsideness involves alienation from place.”

How do near places contrast to far places?
Near places may not always be geographical, a place could be miles away but feel closer due to attachment. The time/space convergence has made far places feel alot closer.
How do experienced places contrast to media places?
Media places are places that have only been read about / seen in the media. Places often feel different once they have been experienced. Experiences turn undifferentiated spaces into places.
What are endogenous factors?
Endogenous factors are internal factors affecting a place’s character.

What are exogenous factors?
Exogenous factors are external factors affecting a place’s character.
What are some exogenous factors that could affect a place’s character?

What are agents of change?
Agents of change are people or groups who impact a place whether its through living, working or trying to improve the place.
Give some examples of agents of change
The government, individuals, TNCs, NGOs, The media, Influencers/celebrities, Local councils, protesters.

How was the government an agent of change in Stratford
The government planned the regeneration for the 2012 Olympic games. It caused gentrification, but costed £5bn more than planned and few jobs were created.

The IOC planned the construction of the Olympic stadium and village. The area still benefits from it today via West Ham United.

Here East created over 10,300 employment opportunities, contributing £700, to the 2021 GDP.
