A

Developed in the 1770s . A short cannon that fired grapeshot at a short range
. Easy to fire.quick to reload and was deviateing when Aimee at a deck. Gave Britain an advantage in close quarter fighting.

First use was with HMS Rainbow in 1782. 1792 HMS Glatton as armed just with Carronade

A

Long barrel guns become more accurate and quicker to fire they were less useful. Phased out of service by 1850.

Congreve’s Rockets

A

Received the Prince of Wales’s support. Addoped by the army in 1806. Used in the Napolnic wars. Used in attack upon Boulgne. Had a good phycoligal affect. And used in Copenhagen and war of 1812. Very inaccurate and did little damage.

Navy used it for ship to ship bombardment.Wellington as against its use. Not easy to store .

Armstrong Gun

A

This was breachloaded which didn’t damge the barrel as much and simpler to reload. There was a smaller gap between projectile and barrel and there was rifling which improved accuracy.

Adopted in 1859 . Required greater maintenance and greater training and expensive amuntion .dispite it’s success govt referend to muzzle loading in 1871 but became the norm by 1880 . By 1890s it was the Navy’s main armerment

What was the impact of the Armstrong guns ?

A

It made the battlefield much wider from the 3 miles at Waterloo to 25 miles at the Soome . Ships changed from broad sides to turret-mounted Gunns . It’s killing power led to trench warfare .they could fire so far spotters were required

Maxim gun was the first machine gun. 1884. Could fire 600 rounds a minute.Vickers 1897 . This was easer to fire , lighter and more reliable . A single machine gun was equivalent to 50 rifle men

Made there debut in 1916 during the Somme .of the 50 tanks only 24 made it to the start. Several broke down after that and some were destroyed but they showed there value, the Germans and French quickly developed their own
