Changes in the processes along the long profile of a river. Flashcards
Upper course erosion.
Abrasion and hydraulic action.
Mostly vertical.
Upper course transportation.
Load size varies.
Large boulders are moved in times of high discharge and they roll and bounce banging against the river bed.
Upper course deposition.
All coarse material stays where it is when a river reduces its discharge.
Middle course erosion.
Mainly hydraulic.
Less vertical erosion and more lateral.
Middle course transportation.
Smaller load size moved along the river bed through traction or saltation.
Finer material is moved in suspension during floods.
Middle course deposition.
Deposition of sand and gravel occurs on the insides of meanders.
Some flood plain deposits occur then the river overflows.
Lower course erosion.
Reduced but there is some hydraulic action in the beds.
Lower course transportation.
Sand is moved along the river bed by traction and fine materials are moved in suspension.
Lower course deposition.
This consists of fine silts and clays.
Coarser material is dropped to form levees in times of flood.
