Changes Flashcards
What are the two schools of thought on the nature of the emergence of EC in sculpture?
gradual, organic evolution
vs
fast paced revolution
What does Neer say on the emergence of EC? Period he assigns to emergence?
‘does not represent a radical break or rupture with Archaic past’
‘ongoing adjustment of emphasis’
c500-460 BCE
What does Stewart say on the emergence of EC? Period he assigns to emergence?
‘appears suddenly and in revealing circumstances’
‘described by the cliché “sprung fully armed from the head of Zeus”’
480-70 BCE
What are the two main categories of change seen in EC sculpture?
Art style:
POSTURE, PHYSIQUE, PHYSIOGNOMY; how figures were represented; postures and physique more realistic; engagement with viewer enhanced.
Personal styling:
hair is shorter and less ostentatious; pubic hair less razored and more naturalistic; standard for clothing becomes just himation (as opp to chiton/himation combo) or peplos for women
Why do externally dated monuments appear to support the idea of REVOLUTION in sculptural style?
all before 480 BCE have late archaic features and style whereas all after are more EC
What stylistic note should be made as a nuance as to the idea of distinct periods between EC and LA?
there are continuities from LA into EC style
What are 3 important factors that could have contributed to the change to EC?
Persian Wars: had a big influence on the idea of ‘greekness’ and how this was represented.
Technology: shift from marble to bronze was around similar time, bronze has higher tensile strength meaning greater detail could be achieved.
Statue Habits(politics?): (Athens esp) shift from individual patrons to state sponsorship
What, resulting itself from the P wars, could have been a key mechanism in the spread of EC across Greece?
Delian League
What could explain the continual use of archaic sculptural details in pieces that also have clear EC influence?
attachment of commissioner/subject to Archaic styling (likely aristocratic tendency)
What political change occurred in Athens which both limits the statue record and possibly contributed to the dev of EC?
late 6th early 5th - There was a ban on ostentatious private funerary practices including both tombs and grave markers, and speeches
What are Hölscher’s three functions of images in a social sense?
representation - bringing past events or people into interaction with the living
décor - applied imagery intending on beautification separating their contexts from objects of pure function.
objects of discourse - image has transcended the other two to have a further significance, opening the possibility of reflection and discourse, and new significance for the image.
What influence has modern art had over study of ancient art that needs to be reduced?
ancient artists were not actively contributing to an art movement or development of pictural language etc
Rather, they were made to be interacted with in a certain way within a specific (often social) context
What is the fundamental problem that enables the argument around the nature of emergence of EC to continue?
problems with dating certain works and the chronology of them overall
What about the artistic approach to creating a work changed in EC?
closer relationship between subject and statue involving closer looking of artist and realistic recreation of the work
What are two elements that changed in EC that could have resulted from styles in reality changing rather than just artistic preference?
hair
clothes
