Chaney (Developmental) Flashcards
Chaney Aims
To test if positive reinforcement with the funhaler improved compliance in children with asthma, compared to using a normal inhaler
Chaney Sample
- 32 asthmatic children (22 male, 10 female)
- age range 1.5 - 6 years
Chaney Procedure
Informal consent was solicited from the children’s parents who also participated in the study by completing a questionnaire and helping with the administration of the asthma medication to the children.
Participants then were asked to use a funhaler instead of their normal instead of their normal inhaler to administer medication to the children. They were only told parental guidance was required and no other instruction
After the allocated time for using the funhaler had passed, parents completed a matched item questionnaire. Researchers also conducted one random check via telephone checking on usage of funhaler on the day prior
Chaney Results
There was increased parental and child compliance, for example the results show that 22% more parents were found to have medicated their child on the previous day compared to the standard inhaler. In addition to this fact, 30% more children too the cycles required than in the case of the standard inhaler. 58% more children enjoyed taking their medication using the funhaler
Chaney Conclusions
Through the use of positive reinforcement the funhaler improved medical compliance in young people with asthmatics. The use of funhaler may lower rates of admission into hospitals for asthma attacks. Devices that use self-reinforcement strategies can improve health in children. The study does support Chapmans study as fear, dislike, panic were reduced with the funhaler but compliance increased
