Biological Area Flashcards
Biological Key Principles
- behaviour can largely be explained by biological factors
- biological processes measured in a scientific way = MRI
- brains structure + function impacts behaviour and how it can be influenced by behaviour
Biological Key Concepts
- brain plasticity
- delay of gratification
- specialised functions of regions of the brain
Strengths of the Biological Area
- knowledge it gives us of the brain is useful = is helping those with disorders
- emphasis on scientific method helps secure the reputation of psychology as an academically scientific discipline
- emphasis on scientific method makes it easier to test studies for reliability
Weaknesses of the Biological Area
it is limited in ways to collect data + study brain processes directly and objectively = have to rely on self-report which can reduce validity due to demand characteristics. Technology used has limitations so sometimes inferences have to be made.
Brain Plasticity
Blakemore + Cooper and Maguire both support the biological area because they both look at the plasticity of the brain. B+C look at the effect of the environment and found the effects of plasticity when kittens would switch to prefer other orientation. Maguire found the plasticity of humans hippocampi
