Urbanisation
A rise in the percentage of people living in urban areas compared to rural areas.
Hyper-Urbanisation
Is like a super fast rate of urbanisation. Mumbai has grown for two reasons which are rural to urban migration and natural increase (the number of births minus deaths).
City
A city is a large town
Million City
A city with at least a million inhabitants.
Megacity
A city of more than ten million people.
World City
A city generally considered to be important in the global economic system.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
Any money or investment that comes from overseas companies. In India, this is TNC’s investing in IT and Call Centres.
Top Down Approach
When decision making about the development of a place is done by governments or large companies.
Metropolitan Area
Metropolitan area is London area, consisting of 33 boroughs.
Conurbation
An extended urban area, typically consisting if several towns merging with the suburbs of a central city.
Transnational Corporations (TNCs)
A huge company that does business in several countries. Many TNCs are much richer than entire countries in less developed world.
Bottom Up Approach
Experts work with communities to identify their needs, offer assistance and let people have more control over their lives, often run by ‘non governmental organisations’.
Push Factor
The reasons forcing people away from an area.
Outsourcing
Where a company moves services overseas. Using people in other countries to provide services if they can do so more cheaply eg. Call Centres.
Pull Factor
The reasons attracting people to a place.
