chain and stages of infection-health1 Flashcards
is an illness caused by harmful microscopic organisms that invade the body called pathogens
infection
the harmful microscopic organisms tht invade are called?
pathogens
determines how well it multiplies inside the body
infectivity
it’s ability to cause disease is callled?
pathogenicity
how well it causes severe disease
virulence
describes the conditions that promote the transmission of diseases
chain of infection
pathogen that causes the disease, bacteria, virus, fungi or parasite
infectious agent
habitat where the infectious agent grows and multiplies
reservoir
path which the agent leaves the reservoir through an open wound, body fluids etc
portal of exit
how the agent gets from the reservoir or host
mode of transmission
name the 2 ways of direct transmission
- direct skin to skin contact
- droplets spread when sneezing, coughing or talking
name the 3 ways of indirect transmission
- airborne transmission
- vehicles such as food, water, biological products and formites(inanimate objects)
- vectors like feas ticks or mosquitos carry pathogens
how the infectious agent enters the host
portal of entry
person who is at risk of getting infected
suceptible host
describes what happens once a susceptible host has aquired a pathogen
stages of infection
name the stages of infection
- incubation stage
- prodrromal stage
- period of illness
- period of decline
- convalescence
depending on the illness it can last 2 days in acute disease to 7 months or years in chronic disease,
incubation period
occurs when it initially enters the host and multiplies
incubation stage
after the incubation period during this the pathogen continues to multiply and the host expierences general symptoms
prodromal stage
after the prodomal stage, stage where the symptoms are most obvious and is the peak of infection or acme point
period of illness
once acme point is reached the pathogens decrease as the immune system combats it however a secondary infection may occur
period of decline
final stage of infection is a period of recovery and patients return to normal function although some dieseases may cause permanent damage to the body
convalescence period
