Setting goals and objective to manage people
Organizing
Figure out resources needed to achieve goal and how to organize the resources effectively and efficiently.
Leading
Getting people to engage to achieve the goal, how to make them motivated
Controlling
Ensure that the goal has been met. If we can’t achieve the goal we go back to the planning process
Upper management
Responsible for overall performance of the firm, how to achieve the overall goals + identifying problems, organizing direction of the company

Middle management
Responsible for implementing decisions of top managers, in charge of their department, their segment in the business

First line management
Responsible for supervising employees, responsible for day to day activity of a business

What is conceptual skills?
Ability to think analytically and achieve integrative problem solving (big picture)
What are human skills?
Ability to work well in cooperation with other persons (connect)
What is technical skills?
Ability to apply expertise and perform a special task with proficiency (apply expertise)

What are team organization?
Bringing people with different expertise together
Centralized vs decentralized organization
Centralized: decision made by top management
Decentralized: decision made by all stage of management
Span of control: wide vs narrow
Wide: more people you manage
Narrow: less people you manage
Tall vs flat organization
Tall: many layers of the business to the hierarchy
Flat: fewer layers
Intrinsic motivation
Within a person: sense of purpose
At work: stems from the direct relationship between worker and task, usually self-applied
Extrinsic motivation
Environment (pay, liking people fringe benefits)
At work: stems from the work environment external to the task, usually applied by others
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Once a need is satisfied, it cannot be used for motivation anymore
What is self fulfilling prophecy?
Hoed you treat your workers=how they are going to act
What are the cognitive steps in vroom’s expectancy theory?
Effort leads to a desired performance which leads to a desired outcome
What is equity theory?
Where you stand compared to others, if you provide the same level of job you should have the same salary
What happens if there is an inequity?
A person might quit or workless
What are leaders?
Individuals who influence provide guidance and tools in order for individuals to attain a collective goal
What are the three types of leadership?
Autocratic, free-rein, democratic
What is an autocratic leadership?
Leader is making all the decisions and tell people what to do.
What is a free-rein leadership?
Leader set the objectives and let others decide how o achieve them
Democratic leadership?
Leader shares powers with the followers. Decision and ideas comes from different levels in the workforce
What is formal leadership?
Holds a position of authority within the organization (based on position)
They are expected to influence otheres
What is informal leadership?
Without a formal position of authority within the organization (ex: a coworker that knows a lot of a company and are natural leaders)
They emerge to occupy leadership roles
What is transformational leadership?
Providing a new vision to bring organizations, commitment
What are the characteristics of a transformational leadership?
Intellectual stimulation
Individualized consideration(think of each individual person than a whole group)
