Ch.8 Flashcards
What is a joint (articulation)?
a point which 2 bones interact
What are the 3 functions of joints?
- help facilitate body movement by directing the movement of bone
- Stabilize the position of bones relative to one another
- to provide a bit of flexibility to the skeleton
What are the classification of joints?
functional classification & structural classification
What are the 3 types of functional classification of joints?
Synarthroses, Amphiarthroses, Diarthroses
What is synarthroses? what are 3 examples?
its an immovable joints: suture joints in your skull, gomphoses, Syndesmoses
What is Amphiathroses? What is an example?
Slightly moveable joints: intervertebral joints
what is diarthroses?
freely moveable joints
What are the types of structural classification?
fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
what are 3 examples of synarthrosis?
suture joints in your skull, gomphoses, Syndesmoses
What is an example of Amphiarthroses?
intervertebral joints
are synovial joints freely moveable?
True
the 3 type of fibrous joints?
Suture, Syndesmosis, gomphosis
Are all fibrous joints characterized as synarthrosis?
True they are functionally immovable joints
Where are sutures located?
in the skull between cranial bones & facial bones
What are examples of syndesmosis?
femoral tibial joint
are gomphosis strong connection between teeth & skull
true they are immoveable(synovial)
what are cartilaginous joints?
bones held together by cartilage (hyaline cartilage/fibrocartilage)
Examples of cartilaginous joints
synchondrosis: bones joined by hyaline cartilage
Symphysis: 2 fibrocartilage CT attached one bone to another
What characteristics do all synovial joints share?
- Diarthrosis
2.Stabilized by a ligament externally - joint cavity
ID #1.describe & identify the function.
Ligament, made of dense regular CT stabilizes all synovial joints externally
ID #4. describe & identify the function.
Synovial capsule(fibrous capsule):
contains dense irregular connective tissue called ligaments: provides strength & flexibility to the joint
ID #5 describe & identify the function.
Synovial membrane: areolar CT covers all internal joint surface
secreates synovial fluid into the cavity
ID #2. describe & identify the function.
joint cavity: contains small amount of synovial fluid but expands when fluid accumulates
the function of synovial fluid?
Provides lubrication to reduce friction between the bones of the joint; nourishes cells of the cartilages
what is a bursa?
Are fluid – filled sacs prevent friction between skin, muscle, or tendons and an underlying bone
What is a meniscus?
shock absorbers and stabilize the knee
