Axial Skeleton Flashcards
Define Bone Marking
it’s unique structural feature of the bone, that serves a specific functional role.
What are 3 functional roles of bone marking?
- Projections that are sites of muscle and ligament attachment
- Surfaces that form ligaments
- Depressions & openings for blood vessels and nerves
ID the bone marking
Tuberosity:
Large rounded projection; may be roughened
ID the bone marking
Crest:
Narrow ridge of bone; usually prominent
ID the bone marking
Trochanter:
Very Large, blunt, irregularly shaped process (femur)
What is a Tubercle?
Small rounded projection or process
ID
lesser Terbercle
ID the bone marking
Epicondyle:
Raised area on or above a condyle
What is a Process?
Any body prominence
What is a head?
large smooth projection-fit into another bone marking
ID the bone marking
Facet
Smooth, nearly flat articular (joint) surface
ID the bone marking
Condyle
rounded projection; typically fit into a bone marking on another bone in order to form a joint.
What is a Foramen?
“hole”
round oval opening through a bone
What is a Meatus? (Highlighted in green)
Canal
What is a Fossa?
Shallow, basin like depression in a bone, often serving as an articular surface.

Foramen Magnum
Where do you find the foramen magnum?
In the occipital bone
What’s the function of the foramen magnum?
It’s the point which the spinal cord enters into the cranial cavity
ID the bone marking
Mastoid process
What is the structure highlighted by red and it’s function?
sternocleidomastoid muscle
Function: Prime mover of the head
External acoustic meatus

ID the process highlighted in red
Styloid process
Function of styloid process?
Forms a point of attachment for the muscles that allow you to swallow
