CH7: Review Questions Flashcards
What are the three layers of the skin?
Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis
What is the most numerous cell of the epidermis
keratinocyte
What are the two primary layers of the dermis and what are they made of?
papillary - areolar connective tissue
reticular - dense irregular connective tissue
What are the four protective functions of the skin?
UV protection, reduces water loss, regulates body temp, protects from infection
What are the 4 types of cells in the epidermis?
keratinocytes - protein,
melanocytes - melanin protects from UV,
dendritic cells - immune response,
tactile cells - sensitive touch receptors
What tissue is the epidermis composed of ?
stratified squamous epithelial
What are the five layers of the epidermis?
stratum corneum - 20-30 dead flattened (keratin present)
stratum lucidum - dead and only in thick skin (two layers)
stratum granulosum - 4-6 layers dead (prevents water loss and numerous granules)
stratum spinosum - several layers thick (pre-keratin filaments)
stratum basale - mitotically active (rapid cell division) (melanocytes and tactile)
List the sensory receptors found in the dermis of the skin
free nerve endings ( pain/temp)
tactile corpuscles (touch in hairless skin)
lamellar corpuscles (pressure)
What are hair and nails comprised of?
dead/keratinized cells
What are cutaneous receptors
specialized nerve endings that respond to temp, touch, etc..
What structures are related to hair:
hair shaft
