Q

What’s bad about stacked bonds and why don’t we recommend them for exterior construction.

A

they are weaker structurally as the pattern features no blocks interlocking, unlike a running bond.

9
Q

Why would you want to dimension your wall to be a multiple of the CMU units used?

A

so you don’t have to cut the unit at all, and therefore not risking any form of moisture infiltration.

16
Q

What are coursing tables?

A

tables that list out common brick sizes, as well as their actual sizes

17
Q

Should “flexural cracking” be considered when designing brick veneer walls

18
Q

What is a brick tie?

A

a piece that connects the brick wall to the steel stud in a steel stud back up wall with brick veneer. They also tie the brick wall together.

19
Q

Does brick veneer resist loads?

20
Q

Where would you need flashing in a brick veneer steel stud wall?

A

anywhere there isn’t an airspace.

21
Q

Where do weep holes go? what are they for?

A

they go above the flashing? they are so water can escape the building if need be.

22
Q

Where would shelf angles need to go in a brick veneer steel wall?

A

in every opening and at every floor

23
Q

what are expansion joints for?

A

they separate areas of brick into panels and allow for controlled expansion and contraction at a different rate than the materials they are attached to.

24
Q

How big of an airspace do you need between your brick veneer and sheathing? what is this airspace for?

A

minimum 2”. this airspace allows for any water that penetrates to easily flow back out the brick veneer through the weep holes. it’s also a natural thermal barrier.

25
Where would you place a rainscreen in a brick veneer steel stud wall?
behind the airspace, and in front of the sheathing so it can latch onto something.
26
According to Louis Kahn, What does brick want to be?
Brick wants to be arched
27
Is brick a green product?
it can be easily reused as is, and durable compared to most materials, but energy intensive to create.
28
Name some famous masonry buildings/
Stonehenge, Pyramid of Giza, Cyclopean wall, The Parthenon, Roman Aqueduct, Wainright Building, etc.
29
what is a wythe?
the vertical section of masonry that is one unit thick
30
What is a typical unit for a CMU unit?
200 x 200 x 400
31
what is typical unit for a brick?
4” x 2.25” x 8”
