Ch. 6: Structural Steel Flashcards
What are wide flange beams typically used for?
Beams, purlins, columns
What Are Hollow Structure Sections (HSS) used for
Columns, Gifts
For Open Web Steel Joists, what range of depth is used for short span joists
200mm - 600mm
what is steel made from?
Iron, carbon, and other elements
What separates steel from cast iron?
They differ in corrosion resistance. cast iron can suffer worse from corrosion compared to steel, and is often not used in high rise construction compared to steel. Cast Iron is also less ductile
At What point in history did steel construction really start to take form
19th century
What is the main benefit of steel construction compared to wood and concrete.
Steel construction can allow for thinner and taller structures given it’s high strength properties. It also allows for greater artistic expression from an architect.
What two famous buildings were made from Cast Iron construction?
“Eiffel Tower” and “Crystal Palace”
How do we make steel fire resistant?
- cover with concrete or gypsum 2. cover with a special paint/sealant
What’s the biggest issue in steel construction?
corrosion
What type of steel is best for facades?
weathering steel
What’s special about stainless steel?
resistant to rusting/damage
Name 2 solutions to preventing steel from corrosion?
- cover with paint or another material
- alloy (mix other metals with steel)
- galvanized steel (lasts longer than regular steel as oxygen will react with zinc first)
is steel recyclable?
yes
What is steel “T” shape called?
Structural Tee
What is a WWF/
Welded Wide flange
What does an “S” shape look like
Looks more like an “I” but less wide compared to a wide flange
