First Continental Congress
The first delegation meeting to determine how the colonies would handle the escalating british policies
Actions of the Continental Congress
Refused intolerable acts, declaration of rights and grievances, association for economic stance, measure for a second congress to meet if the first did not succeed
Lexington and Concord
April 18 1775, The british approach Lexington, the colonists are warned by Revere and Dawes, move forward to battle at Concord
Bunker Hill
June 17 1775, one of the first major battles between british and american forces
Second Continental congress
Adopted military policies, worked on peace efforts with the King George 3, who dismissed them
Thomas Paine
wrote “argument for independence”, which argued for the colonies to sever ties with Britain
Declaration of Independence
Adopted on July 4 1776, declared independence from Britain officially
Patriot Army makeup
Both white and african americans fought as patriots
Loyalists (Tories)
Americans who believed the revolution was wrong and stood with the King
Native American stance
Attacks by Americans led them to side with the British
War Turnout
Although the first few years were bad for the americans, French assistance and perseverance led to the eventual victory of the colonists at Yorktown, the final deciding battle. The treaty of paris was signed and America was officially declared independent
State governments
Each had their own bill or declaration of rights, voting for all white males, separation of powers
Articles of Confederation
the first constitution, structuring the government and distributing power. didn’t do enough in terms of common currency, no consolidated power, no foreign respect
Social changes
Abolition of aristocratic titles, separation of church and state, women roles remained, slavery remained
