Both slave and free accounted for 20 percent of the population, with 90 percent slaves in the south
Key traits of colonial society
English culture dominance, self governance by each colony, toleration, and no hereditary aristocracy

Continued to work, landowning reserved, near unlimited power in the home by english law
Women
Average 8 kids, household work, education, divorce legal but rare, limited rights
Economic traits
All colonies had a variety of different types of land for farming, with the most arable in the south where plantations were profitable. Gold and silver used for trade, paper currencies led to inflation
Religion
Protestant dominance in the early colonies. Anglicans and congregationalists present as well
The Great Awakening
Large intellectual change, more expression of religious freedom, strongest from 1730s to 1740s
Culture
New architecture and art styles, widespread literature, new pioneers like Ben Franklin in the field of science
Education
First tax-supported schools, first colleges such as Harvard etc
New professions
Physicians, Lawyers, press workers
Politics
Local governments, bicameral legislature in each, voting limited to priveleged white men
