Ch4: Forces in Action Flashcards
Define one Newton
A newton is the force that will accelerate a mass of 1kg by 1ms^-2
Define the force ‘drag’
The resistive force on an object travelling through a fluid.
Define the Normal Contact Force
The force arising when an object rests against another object, acting at 90° to the plane of contact.
What is the equation for a moment of a force?
Moment=fx, where x is the perpendicular distance to the pivot.
What is a couple?
Two forces with equal magnitude and opposite direction.
What is the torque of a couple?
The product of the magnitude of one of the forces, multiplied by the perpendicular distance between the forces.
What type of force do a couple produce?
Rotational, not translational.
What are the requirements for body to be in equilibrium?
Net force acting on it is 0, net moments are also 0.
What is the centre of mass of an object?
Where the entire weight of the object appears to act from.
What are two tools that can be used to take accurate measurements of a solid?
A Micrometer or Vernier Callipers.
What is the equation for pressure in a column of fluid?
Pressure = height of fluid column x density of fluid x acceleration of free fall.
What is archimedes principle?
The upthrust exerted on an object immersed in fluid is equal to the weight of fluid displaced by the object.
