Ch3: Motion Flashcards
What graph is speed the gradient of?
Distance time graph - with distance on the y, and time on the x
How is instantaneous speed found?
By finding the gradient of a tangent to a point on the distance/time graph
What is the area under a velocity time graph?
Displacement
What is the suvat equation for v^2?
v^2=u^2+2as
What is the suvat equation for v, not using s?
v=u+at
What is the suvat equation using u,s,t&a?
s=ut+1/2at^2
What is the suvat equation for displacement using initial and final velocities, and time?
s=1/2(u+v)t
Finish the equation: s=ut…
s=ut+1/2at^2
Finish the equation: s=1/2(…
s=1/2(u+v)t
Finish the equation: v^2=..
v^2=u^2+2as
Finish the equation v=u+…
v=u+at
What is the difference between stopping distance and thinking distance?
Stopping distance is the total distance travelled to stop. Thinking distance is a component of this and is the distance travelled before brakes are applied
What is thinking distance + braking distance?
Stopping distance
What is u+at?
v
What is u^2+2as
v^2
What is the equation for thinking distance?
Speed x reaction time
What value of g is generally used?
9.81ms^-2
How is g measured in the laboratory?
An electromagnet holding a ball over a trap door. Current is turned off, the ball falls and a timer is started; when the ball hits the trap door, the circuit is broken and the timer stops.
With no air resistance, what happens to horizontal velocity of a thrown object?
It remains constant
