ch.4 cell theory Flashcards
cell theory:
explain the observation that all organisms are composed of cells
cell theory includes 3 principals:
- all organisms are composed of one or more cells
- cells are the smallest living things
- cells arise only by division of a previously existing cell.
the rate of diffusion is affected by 4 variables:
- surface area available for diffusion
- temperature
- concentration gradient of diffusing substance
- the distance over which the diffusion must occur
the advantage of small cell size is readily apparent in terms of the _______ ____ - __ - ______ ______. As a cell’s size increases, its volume increases much more rapidly than its surface area.
surface area to volume ratio
4 parts of cell structure:
- nucleoid or nucleus
- cytoplasm
- ribosomes to synthesize proteins
- plasma membrane
in ________ the simplest organisms, this consists of a single circular molecule of DNA. It is found near the center of the cell in an area called the _________, which is not surrounded by a membrane.
prokaryotes, nucleoid
______ cells are more complex, with DNA organized into linear chromosomes segregated into a ________, which is surrounded by a double-membrane structure called the ______ ________.
eukaryotic, nucleus, nuclear envelope
a semifluid matrix called the _________ fills the interior of the cell. the _________ contains all of the sugars, amino acids, and proteins the cell uses to carry out its everyday activities.
cytoplasm, cytoplasm
cytosol
=the fluid part of the cytoplasm, which contains organic molecules and ions in solution
_______ are large, macromolecular machines composed of RNA and protein that synthesize all cellular proteins.
Ribosomes
plasma membrane
=encloses a cell and separates its contents from its surroundings
