Ch3L3 Linear Equation Word Problem--Speed Flashcards
How far ( do you go) ?
How long( does it take) ?
How fast (do you drive/run…) ?
Distance(Km) = Speed(km/h) x Time(hour)
Speed(km/h) = Distance(Km) / Time(hour)
Time(hour) = Distance(km)/ Speed(km/hour)
If you move 50 meters in 10 seconds, what is your speed?
Speed = ____ / ______
so speed here is:_______(unit?)
Mike rides his motorcycle at an average speed (velocity) of 20 meters/second for 500 seconds, how far did he ride?
Distance = Speed x Time
so distance here is: 20m/s times 500 s = 10000 m
Sarah runs at an average speed of 8 meters per second, how long will it take her to complete the race of 200 meters length?
Time = Distance / Speed
so here time needed is 200m divided by 8 m/s = 25 second
What does SPEED mean?
Emily drives her car with a constant speed of 56 km/h. How far can she travel in 1 hour?
Speed means
how far(km/m…) we move in a unit time(hour/s..).
so she can travel ___km in one hour.
Unit of Distance
Kilometer
Meter
Centimeter
Millimeter
mile
Unit of Speed
Km/h
m/s
Mi/h
Unit of Time
Year
Month
Day
Hour
Minute
Second
Distance Unit Conversion
1 Km = 1000 m
1 m = 100 cm
1m = 10 dm
1 dm = 10 cm
Time Unit Conversion
1 Year = 12 Months
1 Week = 7 Days
1 Day = 24 Hours
1 Hour = 60 Minutes
1 Minute = 60 Second
1 Hour = 3600 Second
Speed Conversion
1Km/h = 1000m/3600s~=0.277m/s
Write the Equation:
A bus travels 210 miles in 3 hours. Assume the distance it traveled is directly proportional to the time traveled.
1: From “distance traveled is directly proportional to time”, we can see Distance and Time is in Direct Variation. so
Distance = m x Time.
We know m is the Speed in this case. So
Speed = 210mile divided by 3 hour = 70m/h
Distance = 70m/h x Time
Bill and Amy want to ride their bikes from their neighborhood to school which is 14.4 kilometers away. It takes Amy 40 minutes to arrive at school. Bill arrives 20 minutes after Amy. How much faster (in meters/second) is Amy’s average speed for the entire trip?
How to solve?
A bus travel 210 miles in 3 hours. Assume the distance it traveled is directly proportional to the time it spends. How many miles can this bus travel in 6 hours?
A new SUV car can travel 288 miles on nine gallons of gas. Assume the distance it traveled varies directly with the number of gallons of gas. How many miles can this SUV travel on 27 gallons of gas?
A car travels along a road at a steady speed of 60 mph. How far will it travel in 6 hours?
