Ch.3: The Nervous System Flashcards
sensory neurons
carry input messages from the sense organs to the spinal cord and brain
motor neurons
transmit output impulses fromt he brain and spinal cord tot he body’s muscles and organs
CNS (central nervous system)
consisting of all the neurons in the brain and spinal cord
PNS (peripheral nervous system)
composed of all the neorns that connect the CNS and the muscles, glands and sensory receptors
2 parts of the PNS
1) somatic nervous system
2) autonomic nervous system
somatic nervous system
consists of SENSORY NERUONS that are specilzed to transmit nessages from the eyes, ears and other sensory receptors
consists of MOTOR NERUONS that sned messages fromt he brain and spinal cord to the muscles
autonomic nervous system
controls glands and the involuntary muscles that form the heart, blood vessels and lining of the stomach
Two parts of the autonomic nervous system:
- sympathetic nervous system - speeds up processes within the body
- parasympathetic nervous system - slows down body processes and returns you to a state of rest.
