CH.28.1 Flashcards
troposphere
comes from the Greek word tropos, meaning a turn, change and the Greek word spharia, meaning sphere all weather occurs in the troposphere
temperature inversion
A temperature inversion is a layer in the atmosphere in which air temperature increases with height.
greenhouse effect
the trapping of the sun’s warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.
a central point about which condensation takes place
troposphere
describe the layers of the atmosphere
troposphere stratosphere mesosphere thermosphere exosphere
Define the greenhouse effect:
a process in which the warming of earth takes place, mostly as a result of excess greenhouse gasses, which enclose and trap energy that would have otherwise left earth.
Explain why Earth’s atmosphere today contains more oxygen than Earth’s early atmosphere
A.Earth’s early atmosphere contained mostly hydrogen and helium
B.these gasses were lost and were replaced by gasses from volcanic eruptions
C.Oxygen from photosynthetic marine organisms accumulated in the atmosphere and intense solar radiation converted some of it into ozone
Compare and contrast cirrus, cumulus, and stratus clouds.
A.cumulus are puffy and white
b. cirrus looks like wispy curls and they are high in the sky
c. stratus looks like a blanket and they are low
How might an increase in average atmospheric temperatures affect the water cycle?
An increase in temperature leads to generally higher humidity in the atmosphere, which can reemit even more radiation back to Earth, thereby increasing the temperature even more. it also leads to increased precipitation.
what earth’s Atmosphere is mainly made up of?
nitrogen is the largest component with 78 percent
what is the 2nd most abundant gas in atmosphere?
Oxygen 21%
what is the 1% of gasses in the atmosphere called?
Trace gasses, most are argon
how many layers are there in the Earth’s atmosphere?
5
what are the layers of the atmosphere?
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere
