A
47
Q

Explain how Grignard Reagents work; talk about what organometallic compounds are, their uses in organic chemistry, the reagents used and the steps involved.

A

Organometallic compound = C-Metal bond, useful for increasing length of carbon chain, usually Mg or Li used.
Steps:
1. Organometallic compound provides source of type of nucleophile called ‘carbanion’, which contains carbon with delta negative charge.
2. Carbanion reacts w/ positively charged carbon atom/chain to form new C-C bond.
