Ch14 Alcohols Flashcards
What are Alcohols?
- Alcohols are homologous series
- General formula C2H2n+1OH
- They are NOT hydorcarbons
- They have a hydroxyl (OH) functional group
- position of OH needs to be indicated by number
How do alkanes and alcohols compare?
How do alkanes and alcohols compare in terms of intermolecular forces?
How do alkanes and alcohols compare in terms of volatility and boiling points?
Describe the solubility of alcohols in water.
What is 1º, 2º and 3ºclassification of alcohols?
What are the 4 reactions that alcohols undergo?
- Combustion
- Oxidation
- Dehydration (alcohol -> alkene)
- Substitution
Describe Combustion of Alcohols:
In basic terms, explain the oxidation of alcohols
do not go into 1º or 2º yet
Explain the oxidation of 1ºalcohols
Explain the oxidation of 2º alcohols
Explain the oxidation of 3º alcohols
3ºalcohols do NOT undergo oxidation reactions - colour stays orange
* carbon atom that carries the OH group does not have a hydrogen atom attached but is instead bonded to other carbon atoms
Explain the dehydration of alcohols:
Explain the Substitution of alcohols
